Sheriden Woods Health Care Center offers Lymphedema Management

Sheriden Woods Health Care Center offers Lymphedema Management to treat individuals who have problems with their lymph drainage system. Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT is the most effective approach to treat chronic lymphedema. CDT is a gentle, non-invasive, and highly effective therapy.

The Complete Decongestive Therapy process consists of:

  • Gently redirecting fluid from the impaired lymphatic area to areas of the body where the lymphatic system is functioning normally
  • Applying low-stretch bandages using varied pressure to the involved limb to help prevent lymph fluid from returning to swollen areas and to prevent tissue hardening
  • Increasing lymph flow from the affected area
  • Teaching good hygiene and skin inspection techniques to reduce the risk for developing cellulitis or fungal infections
  • Using custom garments to help prevent lymph fluid from refilling in the tissues

Certified Therapists

Our certified therapists are trained in the four components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (Manual Lymph Drainage), Compression Therapy, Exercises, and Skin Care. Therapists receive a total of 135 hours of instruction comprised of 90 hours of classroom instruction and 45 hours of home study. Upon completion of the class, the therapist is able to differentiate between a variety of peripheral edemas as well as understand the applications, medical indications, and contraindications of MLD and CDT. Additionally, the therapist is able to establish a CDT treatment plan for individuals with primary or secondary lymphedema and perform the indicated treatment.

Athena Health Care Systems now offers a seamless continuum of care to our residents and communities across Connecticut with the introduction of our new Home Health Care services.

Before surgery, we show our care and attention to detail by going above and beyond patients’ expectations. We urge patients to call us before surgery to discuss any concerns so we can help reassure and guide them through the pre and post-op procedures.

After surgery, the initial home care assessment is conducted within our patients’ homes with our nurses and physical therapists. We review home care needs such as manual therapy, functional mobility and home exercise. We provide training regarding medication management, diet and monitoring of vital signs. We coordinate other relevant services with our patients’ physicians, while providing physical and emotional support.

A healthy, active lifestyle is our goal for all our patients. Our highly specialized, compassionate staff of nurses, physical and occupational therapists and home health care aides use the latest techniques available. We want our patients to safely return to their everyday lives as soon as possible.
